Archimedes
Life Of Archimedes
Archimedes was born around 287 BC in the city of Syracuse, Sicily. Archimedes's father was Phidias, Phidias was an astronomer. Phidias was believed to be related to Hieron II who was the king of Syracuse, Sicily. Archimedes was thought to have studied in Alexandra, Egypt. Archimedes is unknown to have had a wife or children. Archimedes died around 212 BC. Archimedes was killed by a Roman soldier who was thought to have not known who he was.
One Of His Greatest Accomplishments
One of the well known stories of Archimedes was called The Golden Crown. The Golden Crown was a crown that the king of Syracuse wanted made from gold but had his doubts so he had Archimedes find out if the maker of the crown had replaced gold with silver. So as the story continues it was said that one day when he went to take a bath he observed that the more his body sank into the water the more water went over the top of the bathtub. Once he realized that he had discovered the answer to his problem he shouted Eureka! and ran off home. He then did some tests and found out that when dropped into water silver had more water come out than gold because gold is denser, so even though they were the same weight one took up less space. Then Archimedes did the same test on the crown by dropping it into an object filled to the brim with water and found out that when more water overflowed, it was then clear that the king had been cheated by the crown being both silver and gold. So that is one of his more famous tests that Archimedes did.
Archimedes' Claw
A great invention of Archimedes was Archimedes' Claw. Archimedes' Claw was a devise that had a hook and rope on one end then a long wooden pole and one the inside wall of the claw were oxen to pull the ship up. The claw acted a lot like a fishing pole in the way that it waited until something came and hooked the ship. Some that sometimes the ships were swung around and then smashed against rocks or dropped into the ocean. So the Romans began to look for pieces of wood or rope and if they saw some they would freak out knowing that Archimedes would sink their ship. That is one of the more well known inventions of Archimedes.
Archimedes' Screw
One of the many devises that Archimedes created was Archimedes' Screw. Archimedes' Screw is a devise that when it spins it will pick up water to higher levels for whatever reason they may have needed. Water is not the only things that the Screw could pick up other things like rocks if it was so desired. The Archimedes' Screw was created to make labor easier and it only took a man or two to work the Screw. The Screw could be used for many things like bringing water from a lower area to a dry area instead of having to bring water up little by little and therefore it reduces the amount of labor that a machine could far easier and faster do the work. So you see Archimedes' Screw was a good invention not his most popular but still an important invention.
