DIAN FOSSEY
Dian Fossey was born in January 16, 1932 in San Francisco, California. She worked as an occupational therapist, but then became interested in primates while she was on a trip in Africa in 1963. She studied the endangered gorillas in the Rwandan Mountain Forest for 20 years before her unsolved murder in 1985. Dian had written a book called, 'Gorillas In The Mist' in 1983 which told her story .
Major Accomplishments:
1-She helped preserve the Mountain Gorillas. She knew that Mountain Gorillas were being captured and and being killed by poachers and traps. As a matter of fact, when her gorilla friend Digit was killed by a trap and was decapitated. She told all Africans to destroy all of the traps. After they had collected and destroyed all the traps, they had gotten 600 in all.
2- She had established a research center in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park right between Mt. Karisimbi and Mt. Visoke. She had called this place 'Karisoke Research Center', combining the names of the two mountains it was between together.
3-She had also set up a charity event that was once called the Digit Fund, but was later named Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International. This charity is for the protection gorillas. The sole purpose of this charity was to help finance anti-poaching and prevent any further poaching.
