Julian's story
Percy Lavon Julian was born on April 11, 1899, in Montgomery to former slaves in Alabama in 1899. Percy applied to Depauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, where he had to take high school-level classes in the evening to get him up to the academic level
of his peers because there was no high schools open to black students. Julian received a scholarship to Harvard University to finish his master's degree, before his acceptances to Harvard Julian was accepted a positions as a chemistry instructor at Fisk University.

Julian was the first black chemist elected to the National Academy in 1973. He was one of the premier scientists, inventors, business leaders, and humanist of his time. Being an African American was something Julian faced and overcame during his lifetime.
Julian formed his own chemical company and the Julian researched institute. He worked at colleges and in industrial laboratories. When he died in 1975 he was one of the richest and most admired African American.
