Samuel Colt was best known for inventing the revolving pistol, in 1836. In 1845, the U.S. government heard of this Pistol and knowing that you didn’t have to constantly reload, was the key to defeating the Indians in Texas and Florida. The next year, at the start of the Mexican war, Samuel Colt desinged an even more effective weapon. The government ordered 1000 of these pistols, and Samuel Colt was back in business.
In both London and New York, Samuel had a company “Colt's Patent Firearms Mfg. Co.” in 1855. Soon, the company was producing 150 firearms a day, this made Colt one of the wealthiest men in America.
Samuel Colts Family:
Christopher Colt and Sarah Colt were Samuel Colt's parents. But when Samuel was only 6 years old, his mother Sarah died from tuberculosis. His father then remarried two years later to Olivia Sargeant. Samuel Colt had three sisters and three brothers. One sister died in his childhood and his oldest sister also died of tuberculosis at age 19. The third sister committed suicide. James (one of his brothers) became a lawyer & his other brother (Christopher) was a Textile Merchant. But unfortunately, his third brother, John Colt, committed suicide on the day he was supposed to be executed after he was found guilty of murder.
In 1873, this gun was one of the most popular guns in the west for the American Civil War. But Colt had then died on January 10th, 1873, and a new model was made and used for World War 1 and World War 2.
