Maria Mitchell

Picture
Early Life

Maria Mitchell was born on August 1st,  1818 in Nantucket,  Massachusetts.  Maria died on June 28th, 1889 in Lynn, Massachusetts.  Both of Maria's parents were Quakers.  When Maria was 12 years old,  she helped her father calculate the exact moment of an annular eclipse.  She went to school on Howard Street, where her father had built his own school for Maria and her 9 siblings.  When her father closed the school,  she attended Unitarian minister Cyrus Peirce's school for young ladies.

Major Accomplishments

Maria Mitchell discovered a comet which is now known as Miss Mitchells Comet.  Her comet is the picture to the left.  Mitchell discovered the comet on October 1st, 1847, at 10:30 pm.  Another one of her major accomplishments would be that Maria was the very first female astronomer.  The last accomplishment for Mitchell would be that, when she was twelve, she helped her father calculate the exact moment of an annular eclipse.

Maria's Telescope

As I mentioned earlier, Maria Mitchell discovered a comet, now known as Miss Mitchells Comet.  The picture to the left is the exact telescope that she used to discover that comet.  Her telescope is being displayed in the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of American History.

This page was created by Colleen V.  I picked Maria Mitchell because at such a young age, she accomplished something so big.  My favorite animals are penguins, dolphins, and dogs.
