Tycho Brahe

Tyge Ottesen Brahe (Tycho Brahe) was born in Denmark in 1546, Brahe's parents were members of nobility. Tycho was raised by his wealthy uncle, and gone to the Copenhagen and Leipzig. Though his family bugging him to study law, Tycho chose instead to study astronomy.

Tycho Brahe was a danish astronomer who had a theory of how the universe works. He had taken his ideas over to the king, who had generously supported Tycho and gave him an island called, Hven from the king. There is where Tycho had built a castle and laboratory to start proving his theory.

As Tycho Brahe was on the island attending Copenhagen university of the year 1566 he had gotten into a fight, causing him to lose his nose. What was so important for them to fight over? Well, they did it arguing over who was the better mathematician, and in result Tycho had to say goodbye to his sweet, sweet nose. It was replaces by the nose shown above.

Tycho had used that Island for over 20 years to work on his theory, until in 1597 the danish king who had granted him the island had no longer founded him only leaving him no choice, but to go over to Wandsbech. (which is known now as Germany). Then settled in Prague and continued his astronomical observations.

Then, over the next 10 year period of time, Tycho Brahe made observations which helped support heliocentric theory (who was made before by Copernicus.) These observations was made with only a compass and a sextant. Brahe listed over 1000 stars! He had proved that comets were not just in the Earth's atmosphere, but objects in space. invented lots of instruments such as the Tychonian Quadrant,

Tycho Brahe's Death

Death :
Although Tycho had died at the age 54, his death seemed suspicious to some and normal to other. It was told that he had died at a banquet, he was uncontrollably drinking that night. Now he knew he needed to be excused to use the restroom, but needed to wait until the host was done. Before he had the chance to pee they claim he died with a bladder explosion.

After Death :
In 1901 and 2010 they had re-dug-ed up Brahe body only to think the first examination there was mercury in his bones. Meaning he was poisoned instead of dying of how it was told back then. Then again comes 2010 where they had re-dug-ed up his body again to find there was Mercury in his bones, but it wasn't from being poisoned it was from his metal nose that was attached to his face in 1556.

Tycho Brahe, Three Greatest Discoveries

1. Tycho discovered the first supernova, or “new star” is what they called it in 1572. Based on his observations of the first Nova we now know, supernova is an exploding star. Not a new star. This first nova was around for about 18 months then slowly faded away. Since this clearly was a change in the sky, opinions were held about supernovas. they no longer thought of this as a star, but a demon like thing in the atmosphere (remember: the heavens were supposed to be unchanging in the Aristotelian view). Later on Tycho was able to prove it was a real star, not just some local object in space.

2.Tycho Brahe had made the the best observations that had had used the only instruments available in order to make an amazing invention in his time. Which was before the invention of the telescope.

3.Tycho Brahe’s observations of how the planets moved, helped Kepler by helping him built a model of the solar system. I which we use now.
